The Thorne Workhouse was built in the early 1800’s as a refuge for the homeless and destitute, the residents consisted mainly of the elderly and infirm, as well as a large number of orphaned children.

By the late 1920’s the workhouse could house around 111 inmates however the average occupancy would been around 80 people.

By 1930 it could house up to 108 inmates including 29 males and 5 females in the casual wards. At this time it was deemed to be too small and closed a few years later.

In 1940 the building became military billeting until 1944 when the local unit of the Sea Cadets moved into the front part of the building

Set over 2 floors with many dark rooms and chilling corridors, the reports of paranormal activity include, the frightening apparition of a man, seen in the upstairs rooms, objects are known to move, fall, or be found out of place. A female spirit is also often seen and heard, with children’s laughter and hushed conversations coming from empty rooms.
